It has been a snowy week in France.  Avoriaz has reported 85cm (nearly three feet) of fresh snow in the past seven days, the biggest accumulation in the country, taking its base up to 250cm in resort and a remarkable 5 metres on higher slopes.

Other big snowfall winners this week included the Grand Massif (75cm), Bonneval (70cm), Tignes (60cm) and La Rosiere (55cm).  The latter’s 4.7m base is the country’s second deepest.

In fact spring snowfall totals are incredible across France.  Val Thorens, which is open in to May, says it has had more than 8.5 metres (nearly 30 feet) of snowfall so far this season.

The week ahead looks like it could bring more snow mixed with some sunny and some cloudy but dry days.  Off piste skiers should be wary too that the avalanche danger level is currently climbing higher up the scale again in many resorts, partly due to strong winds at times.
