The SkiWelt Wilder Kaiser – Brixental area is one of Austria’s best-kept secrets when it comes to epic snow, a huge ski area and a distinct lack of crowds.

The area covers nine different villages (Brixen im Thale, Ellmau, Going, Hopfgarten, Itter, Kelchsau, Scheffau, Söll and  Westendorf), all of which offer a distinct Tyrolean charm and authentic character.

Good snow is pretty much guaranteed across the area. The higher slopes reach up to 2,000 metres in altitude, while those lower down are covered by extensive snow making facilities, meaning great skiing conditions throughout the season.

The area is hugely varied; not only can you explore countless groomed slopes of all levels, but you can also enjoy race courses, night skiing and three different freestyle fun parks. Experienced skiers can take on the challenge of the black run leading down from the Choralpe, which has a maximum gradient of 80%.

Highly efficient lift systems mean travel around the area is easy, and countless other winter activities are available for those that might not fancy skiing all day every day.

Indeed, this is also a fantastic resort for families thanks to the variety of off-slope activities and family services on offer. Cross-country skiers will enjoy almost 150km of impeccably groomed routes, while winter hikers can soak up the stunning panoramic views accessible from the area’s 13 mountain railways. However, for the ultimate family fun, you simply have to try the exhilirating tobogganing runs, which are floodlit so you can spend the day as well as the evening speeding down the slopes.

Special beginners’ ski areas for children are available, as well as childcare services for babies and toddlers who might not quite be on their skis just yet. Youngsters will also love the unique Igloo Village and natural ice sun lounge, both of which enjoy a spectacular location at the top of the Hochbrixen cable car. Plus, we have to mention the area’s many mountain huts, which provide perfect spots for what might just be the best hot chocolate refuel in Austria.

There’s a reason so many who visit the SkiWelt Wilder Kaiser – Brixental return year on year – no matter how often you visit, in this area you will still find new spots to ski.
