Accommodation
Sun Peaks has evolved into one of Canada’s premier ski destinations, combining a vast and varied ski area with a purpose-built, skier-friendly resort village. With 4,400 acres of terrain, Sun Peaks is now Canada’s second largest ski area, offering an impressive blend of scale, reliability and convenience.
Set across three distinct mountains – Tod Mountain, Sundance and Mt Morrissey – the resort delivers long, uncrowded runs, excellent snow quality and terrain to suit everyone from first-timers to seasoned experts. An average of around 6 metres (220 inches) of dry interior powder each winter, combined with roughly 2,000 hours of sunshine annually, makes Sun Peaks one of the most dependable ski resorts in British Columbia.
The pedestrian-only village sits directly at the base of the slopes, giving Sun Peaks a true ski-in ski-out resort feel. Accommodation ranges from hotels and condos to luxury townhomes, with almost all lodging located within easy walking distance of the lifts, ski school, restaurants and après-ski spots. This compact layout is especially popular with families and groups who want maximum time on the mountain and minimal logistics.
Sun Peaks is best known for its long cruising pistes, quiet slopes and excellent intermediate terrain, but there is plenty here for all abilities. Beginners benefit from wide, gentle runs on Sundance Mountain, while intermediates enjoy extensive rolling groomers across Tod Mountain. Advanced skiers will find steeper terrain, gladed runs and powder stashes on Mt Morrissey, along with well-spaced tree skiing throughout the resort.
Modern lift infrastructure ensures efficient access across the ski area, keeping queues short even during peak periods. The size of the mountain means crowds are rarely an issue, and it is easy to find fresh tracks days after a snowfall.
Sun Peaks village has a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere rather than a high-octane party scene. Après ski focuses on cosy bars, casual pubs and quality dining rather than late-night clubs, making it a favourite with families, couples and groups of friends. Restaurants range from informal slope-side eateries to refined dining, while cafés, bakeries and shops add to the village’s year-round appeal.
In addition to downhill skiing and snowboarding, Sun Peaks offers a wide range of winter activities including cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, dog sledding and ice skating. The resort is also well established as a four-season destination, with hiking, mountain biking and golf attracting visitors outside the winter months.
Sun Peaks was originally established in 1961 as Tod Mountain, named after John Tod, a prominent Hudson’s Bay Company fur trader in the mid-19th century. The resort entered a new era of development in the 1990s, when it was renamed Sun Peaks and transformed into the modern, master-planned resort seen today. While expansion plans have evolved over time, continued investment has focused on improving lift systems, terrain access and village amenities rather than rapid large-scale growth.
Sun Peaks stands out for its combination of size, snow reliability and convenience. The extensive terrain, ski-in ski-out village and uncrowded slopes make it an excellent choice for families, intermediates and anyone looking for big-mountain skiing without the intensity or congestion of larger international resorts.
