Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh, the wife of Prince Edward, has been named royal patron of the Armed Forces Para-Snowsport Team (AFPST) and took to the slope at the Snow Centre in Hemel Hempstead to mark the announcement of her appointment.
Apart from enjoying a little slope time, skiing confidently, Sophie also met those behind the scenes, from coaches to volunteers and board members. She also tried some other para sports including laser shooting.
The AFPST, is an independent charity supporting wounded, injured and sick military personnel through para‑snowsport. Their Chief operating officer Elizabeth Winfield said Sophie’s involvement will help the organisation expand its reach and strengthen its life‑changing programmes.
Next year, the team will undertake an Arctic expedition across Norway’s Vidda plateau with amputee veterans, a project Winfield called “vital” for showcasing participants’ resilience. Sophie previously joined the team in Meribel for the UK Armed Forces Winter Sports competition, cheering racers and meeting athletes.
Before marrying Prince Edward in 1999, the Duchess is reported to have spent time worked as a ski rep in Swiss resorts like Crans-Montana. Today, she is an accomplished skier and also serves as the patron of the UK Armed Forces Winter Sports Association.
