School children trapped for two days by extreme weather at Mt Ruapehu in New Zealand are reported to be, “having a ball.”

The 40 children, from Wellington High School, are amongst 80 people trapped at Tukino Ski Field by heavy snow which has locked access roads.

Tukino Skifield manager Sue Graham told media that everyone was warm, safe and that there’s plenty of food.  She said the children were playing in a large, sheltered snow bank.

It’s hoped it will be possible to clear the 14km long access road tomorrow when the weather is expected to ease.

A spokesperson for the school said students and staff were in good spirits.

“It’s a great story when they come home. they’re checking in regularly and all the parents know what’s happening, so it’s all happy days,” she said.
