Plans for one of the world’s largest indoor snow centres have been announced for Merthyr in South Wales.

The proposed £450m project would feature a 500 metre long indoor snow slope which would be among the five longest indoor snow slopes in the world today.

The complex, announced by a company called Marvel Limited, would also feature one of the UK’s largest indoor water parks, complete with permanent surf wave, an indoor bike ad skate park, an equestrian centre and other leisure attractions. There would also be several hotels and some ‘residential development.’

Like a large number of existing indoor snow centres already built, the complex has been proposed for a former coal mining site, in this case Rhydycar West.

Local media reports that the plans are at an ‘early stage’ but that Marvel have already acquired the site where it will be built, back in 2013.

The company say they’ll have ‘informal consultations’ with the local community in October and aim to launch a planning application and begin statutory public consultation in 2018.

Marvel are reported to have signed an agreement with Snowsport Cymru Wales to work jointly on the indoor snow centre’s development with a view to provide a future training base for the Team GB ski and snowboard team.
