Montpellier is a cracking place to start if you fancy mixing a bit of city life with some winter sports. You’ve got the Mediterranean not too far away, plenty of places to eat and drink, and the Pyrenees within driving distance when the snow starts calling. So, why spend the whole trip doing just one thing? Get out on the slopes during the day, then head back for a good meal, a few drinks and a different sort of entertainment once the skis are off.
And if you fancy a little gaming after a day in the mountains, Montpellier and the surrounding area give you a few options to consider, too. This is where everyone will be able to discover every casino game imaginable, including all the latest slot machines. You won’t find a casino right in the centre of Montpellier, mind you, but there are several within easy reach. More on those in a moment.
Font Romeu: Sunshine, Snow and Plenty of Slopes
Font Romeu is one of the biggest ski resorts within driving distance of Montpellier, taking around two hours and 40 minutes by car, depending on the weather and traffic. It’s tucked away in the Pyrenees and has some lovely panoramic views. Better still, it’s known as the sunniest resort in France, with more than 3,000 hours of sunshine a year. Not a bad combination when you’re hoping for a decent day on the mountain.
There’s plenty to get stuck into here. The resort has 43 ski and snowboard runs, two sledding tracks, a snowpark and an area for beginners. So, whether you’ve been skiing for years or you’re still working out how to stop without falling over, there’s something to suit you. Snow cannons cover most of the ski area, too, helping to keep conditions in good shape throughout the season.
Spend the day racing down the runs, stop for lunch with a view, then take your time heading back towards Montpellier. It’s a pretty good way to spend a winter break.
Les Angles: A Pyrenean Favourite
Les Angles: Another Great Ski Spot
Les Angles is another one to check out. It’s up on the Capcir plateau in the Pyrenees, and attracts skiers from Montpellier, Toulouse, Perpignan and even Barcelona.
You’ve got 55 km of ski area and 45 runs, winding through pine forests and open mountain terrain. There’s a decent mix for different abilities, too, plus some lovely views. When you’ve had enough of the slopes, there are plenty of local restaurants where you can grab something good to eat.
Swap the Slopes for Casino Nights
Fancy a change from skiing? Head back towards Montpellier and check out the casinos along the coast.
There’s no casino in Montpellier itself, but you’ve got four within around 35 km, in Palavas-les-Flots, La Grande-Motte, Le Grau-du-Roi and Balaruc-les-Bains. So, if you fancy a bit of casino action, a night out by the sea or just a change of scenery, you’re not short of options.
Spend the day on the slopes, then swap your ski gear for something a little smarter and head out for the evening. Just remember to allow time to get back from the mountains.
That’s the beauty of a trip to Montpellier. You can spend one day skiing in the Pyrenees and another enjoying the coast, good food and a night out. Why stick to one thing when you can mix it up?
