There have been some of the biggest snowfalls yet in Western Canada in the past 24 hours.

Nakiska ski area near Calgary in Alberta and Kicking Horse in BC have both reported receiving two feet of snow in a 24 hour period.

Kicking Horse’s  Mountain Safety Manager described the snowfall as a ‘nuclear snowstorm’ and said

“In just under 24hrs we have received 56cm of snow. There was one hour we received 8cm and another one 10.6cm!”

The new snow is the latest in a very snowy month for Western Canada where another resort, Revelstoke, passed the 3m/10 feet fallen mark earlier this week.

It is still not sue to open until the weekend after next but others, including Big White, Sun Peaks, Cypress Mountain and Whistler have opened early already or will do this weekend.

Conditions are also reported to be great at already-open ski areas including the three ski areas around Banff and at Marmot basin in Alberta.

Lake Louise is scheduled to stage the first of the season’s Alpine World Cup speed events at the end of the month.
