Finland is the latest country to open for its 21-22 ski season.
Two of the country’s leading centres Ruka (pictured, images credit Simo Vilhunen) and Levi in Finland, have opened using ‘snow-farming’ …re distributing snow stored from last winter over summer back out on the slopes. Each has a few kilometres of runs open.
Putting the snow back out when temperatures are cooling means it should last long enough to be topped up by snowmaking and natural snowfall as the main season approaches.
There are now 11 ski areas open in four countries in Europe, with two more glacier centres in Austria and Switzerland due to open this weekend.
Resorts already open include Engelberg, Hintertux, Kaprun-Zell am See (Kitzsteinhorn), Saas Fee, Solden, the Stubai glacier and Zermatt.
