Colorado has announced it will introduce a toll road this season giving skiers the option to pay to use it to get back to Denver quicker, rather than sit in queues.

The success of Colorado’s leading ski areas, many of them accessed by driving west from Denver on I70 has led to ever bigger traffic problems, particularly for weekenders returning to the city.

Projects including widening the road and building a light rail connection to resorts have so far failed to happen.

The cost to use the toll lane on a crucial 13-mile stretch will vary from $3 to $30 (approximately £2 to £20) according to how bad the congestion is, according to a report in the Denver Post.

The ‘ski lane’ is believed to be unique as it is for skiers rather than commuters.  It will operate at weekends and on national holidays only and is reported to be costing $72m (£35m) to install.
