Where To Ski or Board in Italy at the Start of Feb 2017

Italy is a country with very varied conditions in its different parts as we enter February.

In the country’s southern mountains down towards Rome there have of course been huge snowfalls with tragic consequences when combined with an earthquake to cause the avalanche that destroyed a hotel as widely covered in the mainstream media.

Report from Sestriere-online.

But further north in the Dolomite mountains on the border of Austria and Slovenia there has been very little natural snowfall still as we enter February.  It’s the third year in a row like this but most ski runs are actually open and cold, dry weather means the region’s huge snowmaking arsenal is able to keep firing away, turning green hillsides white.

Then in the north west of the country, in the Alps, it has been a pretty ‘normal’ winter to date. The Milky Way and Aosta Valley regions have in fact done better than almost any other region of the Alps for consistent snow since mid-December and bases here are generally very good (up to 2m deep) and conditions excellent.
