After delaying the start of their 2026 seasons in June and early July due to too little snowfall, massive accumulations over the past month have led several ski areas in South America’s Andes to extend operations well into October, long after they usually close.

Portillo Extends Season to 11 October
Portillo resort in Chile, pictured below, has added two weeks to its planned season, now staying open to October 11th. The resort, which was cut off by road for several weeks by the snowstorms, says it’s had the most snowfall in 50 years.
Valle Nevado Open Until 18 October
Another Chilean resort, Valle Nevado, pictured top, has extended its season through to October 18th.
“We are experiencing a remarkable season, and the snow and slope conditions are exceptional,” said Dominique Rudloff, General Manager of Valle Nevado. “Extending through October 18 gives skiers and snowboarders even more time to enjoy what has been an incredible winter in the Andes. With great snow, longer spring days and 121 days of skiing, this is a season we won’t soon forget.”
