Long-standing plans to build an indoor snow centre as part of a leisure centre redevelopment in Swindon appear to be moving forward again.

The plans, first mooted more than five years ago, for the town’s North Star site were given outline planning permission by the local council’s planning committee late last year, and construction work is expected to begin later this year.

The proposals are reported to include a small 2,000m2 snow and ski centre featuring two real-snow slopes, along with a 130-bedroom hotel, a 14-screen cinema with the largest IMAX screen in the UK, a new bowling alley, trampolining and climbing wall, as well as restaurants and sporting retail units on site too.

“Now we have outline planning granted, the work really begins on getting all the detail filled in ready to submit detailed planning, after which we can get to work on making this project a reality,” said John Watkins, director at Seven Capital.
