The Remarkables is the latest New Zealand ski area to announce it will open early for the 2018 season, and believes it will be the first ski area on the country’s south island to open full-time for the winter …so long as no other areas change their plans in the meantime.

Four New Zealand areas were open last weekend – there of them opening earlier than planned. They included two areas on the North Island and two – Cardrona and Coronet Peak on the South island which were opening one and two weeks early respectively, but only for a day or two that weekend.

The Remarkables is opening 48 hours earlier than scheduled on Thursday the 7th June, leap frogging Mt Hutt, which is scheduled to open on Friday 8th June.

Ross Lawrence, The Remarkables Ski Area Manager and his team are pulling all the stops to make it happen.

“With the great snow cover we have on site we will be looking to open with all aspects of our operation, lifts will include the 3 conveyors, Alta, Curvey Basin, Sugar Bowl and Shadow Basin. That’s main trail skiing and riding in great winter snow in just a few days!” he told local media.

More snow is forecast to fall over the next few days.
