Les 2 Alpes held a day of mourning yesterday for the three people killed in an avalanche there on Wednesday afternoon.

The three, a tourist reported to be from the Ukraine and two French children in a school group, were killed when the avalanche hit as they were skiing on a run that was closed. An investigation is currently underway to try to establish why they were there.

A moment’s silence was held at 5.30pm yesterday afternoon in the resort’s Place des 2 Alpes for those who wished to gather together and remember the victims. A large number of people attended, lighting candles,

“Our thoughts are with the families of the victims of this dreadful avalanche,” said a spokesperson from Les 2 Alpes, adding, “We would like to thank the rescue teams (ski patrollers, instructors, rescue in mountains squad, gendarmerie, avalanche rescue dogs…) and volunteers for their remarkable work and efficiency.”

The avalanche danger remains exceptionally high across the Alps and all skiers and snowboarders should stay on marked pistes that are officially open.
