There’s been lots of heavy snowfall on French mountains – both the Alps and the Pyrenees – since 5th November.

There were particularly big snowfalls on the 6th and 7th November but there have been more snowfalls since, particularly on the 12th-13th.

Tignes is the only French ski area open in the Alps, with skiing and boarding on its glacier.  However Val Thorens (pictured top a week ago on the 6th and above on the 13th) will open extensive terrain on 18th November, when it opens for its 2017-18 ski season.  Staff say snow depths are nearly a metre and that 70% of ski runs will be open.

In addition a second French ski area has opened a 2km long run for the 11th/12th weekend and it’s the first to open down in the Pyrenes, where resorts like Cauterets  (pictured above) have already reported 80cm of snowfall on the mountains.

However the ski area that has opened is called Porte Puymorens and it has been selling lift tickets for just 10 Euros a day on opening weekend.
