Why Pre-Booked Transfers Are the Go-To Choice for Family Ski Holidays

A family ski holiday doesn’t normally start with skiing. It starts with the early alarm, the flight with the kids half dead with fatigue, the baggage hall full of ski bags and then the two to three hour journey into the mountains.

That final leg can absolutely set the tone for the rest of the week. Queuing for a taxi with a toddler on your hip, or trying to fit four ski bags, a buggy, and a suitcase into a hire car, isn’t how you’d want to start a ski holiday.

That’s why pre-booked airport transfers have become such a sensible option for families going to the Alps. You can have the right car, the right amount of luggage space and child seats all sorted in advance, so that getting from the airport to the ski slopes is one less thing to worry about.

Here’s what families should consider when booking a ski transfer, plus four family-friendly European resorts worth adding to the shortlist.

Door-to-Door Travel Makes a Difference with Children

After a flight, the last thing most parents want is another complicated journey involving buses, trains and dragging luggage between connections.

With a pre-booked private or shared transfer, you are dropped at the door of your chalet, hotel or apartment wherever vehicle access allows. In car-free resorts, you are taken to the closest point vehicles can reach. Either way, you won’t have to navigate a bus station or find a second taxi.

For families, that’s absolutely the most important thing. Small kids don’t walk very far in ski boots, and very few parents are going to be able to carry two ski bags, a suitcase and a toddler in a pram at the same time.

Your driver will meet you at the airport, take your luggage and drive you straight to your address. On arrival, you simply unpack. Ski-Lifts arrange airport transfers to over 1,300 ski resorts in 20 countries, and all of these can be booked prior to your flight.

Child Seats Can Be Arranged Before You Fly

Travelling with babies and younger kids comes with its own considerations, especially when it comes to car seats.

Child restraint requirements differ from country to country in Europe, and it’s risky to rely on finding the right seat at an airport taxi rank.

When you pre-book, you can add your children’s ages and request baby seats, child seats or boosters in advance. Availability varies by provider and vehicle, so it’s always worth requesting them when you book rather than leaving it to arrival day.

For so many families, that’s one of the big benefits. You don’t have to lug a car seat through the airport, and the kids are safely in their seats from the very first moment you set off on the mountain roads.

There’s room for skis, boots and the buggy

A family of four can end up with a fair bit of luggage.

Four suitcases, ski bags, boot bags, helmets, backpacks and possibly a buggy can very quickly take you well over the capacity of a standard taxi or smaller hire car.

When you book a private transfer in advance you can state your luggage and equipment and a suitable vehicle will then be allocated.

This is very useful for families bringing their own skis/snowboards and for those travelling with pushchairs and the like.

The result is simple: everyone gets a seat, all the bags fit, and nobody spends the journey with a ski bag across their lap.

Travel light: Hire your ski equipment in resort

One very easy way to make the transfer even simpler is to just hire your skis, boots and helmet at the resort rather than take them through the airport.

Lots of transfer providers have ski hire partners and it makes sense to book your equipment in advance. That way you’ve got less to carry on arrival and more room in the car for the basics. Always check whether your transfer provider have ski hire as part of their package or offer any additional deals when you book.

Flight delays don’t have to derail arrival day

Winter weekends are among the busiest periods at Alpine airports, and flight delays happen. Private transfer providers ask for your flight number when booking, so they can monitor your arrival and adjust collection arrangements where possible.

Shared transfers work differently. Passengers are usually grouped by similar arrival times, so significant delays may require moving to a later available service.

Scheduled shuttles run on a fixed timetable, so flights aren’t monitored and it’s definitely worth leaving plenty of time between your landing and departure times.

That peace of mind is a major reason for families to pre-book. You know the plan before you even leave home.

You know the cost before you travel

Family holidays run to a budget. A pre-booked transfer gives you a fixed price at the time of booking, so you know exactly what the journey will cost.

Compare that to the alternatives. Airport taxis to the ski resorts are expensive and can get even more so at busy times. Hire cars come with all sorts of extras that add up quickly: winter tyres, snow chains, child seats, fuel, motorway tolls, and resort parking.

With a transfer, you pay the price you see, and you can compare options side by side before you commit. If you book your ski transfer early in the season, you also have the widest choice of times and vehicles.

Private, Shared or Scheduled Transfers: Which Works Best for Families?

There are different types of pre-booked family ski transfers, each with its own benefits for families.

Private transfers are the most popular choice for families. The vehicle is yours alone, it leaves when you land, and it goes straight to your accommodation. You can stop for a toilet break or a car-sick child without worrying about other passengers. For a family of four or more, a private transfer often costs less per person than you might expect.

Travelling as a larger group? If you are skiing with grandparents, friends, or several families, a private minibus or coach keeps everyone and all the luggage in one vehicle. Private coaches are available for groups, and every vehicle is sized for your party and luggage, so nobody gets split up on arrival day.

Shared transfers are door-to-door where access allows, with no fixed resort stops; in car-free resorts, you are dropped at the closest point vehicles can reach. You share the vehicle with other passengers arriving on similar flights, so you may wait at the airport while the group gathers, sometimes for up to 60 minutes, depending on the route and arrival times. They can suit smaller families on a budget who are happy to trade a little waiting for a lower price.

Scheduled shuttles run on a fixed timetable and stop at set points in the resort, not at your door. They run on a limited number of routes and are the lowest-cost option, but with young children and lots of luggage, the walk from the drop-off point can be hard work.

Tips for booking a family ski transfer

  1. Book early. School holiday weeks, especially February half term and Easter, are the busiest weeks of the season.
  2. Add in every passenger (including infants). Getting the numbers right means you’ll have the correct vehicle and enough seats.
  3. Give your children’s ages. This ensures that correct baby seats, child seats, or boosters are requested.
  4. List your luggage. Include ski bags, boot bags, snowboards and buggies so there’s space for everything.
  5. Add your flight number. Your pickup can then be planned around your actual arrival and flights monitored.
  6. Use your full accommodation address. Door to door only works if the driver knows precisely where you’re staying.
  7. Take snacks and a change of clothes. The mountain roads are twisty and the last hour with tired kids can be a long one.
