Here Come The Girls – Pop In The City Heads to Les Menuires

Pop In the City, the women-only urban race is heading to the slopes of Les Menuires this March!

On the 10th of March, 200-300 women will take to the mountains, completing challenges and activities in small teams during an action-packed day. Throughout these activities, they will learn about, engage with and explore the local area, gaining an incredible unique insight into mountain life in Les Menuires.

The event was born from the idea of “experiential tourism” and the fact that more and more people now are searching for increasing authenticity and local experiences on trips abroad. Their motto, ‘Discovery is a Game’ epitomises their aim to create an experience that is at the same time both educational and a whole lot of fun.

Pop In the City’s idea was to mix comfort-zone stretching challenges with an up-close perspective on a new destination. Influenced by the ‘city weekend break’ culture, they began with city breaks, however as popularity grew, they decided to take on a different location; one which would provide just as much fun, excitement and joy. Where else but the mountains?!

Clementine Charles, Co-Founder and Sponsorship Manager at Pop iI the City says: “The ski events are the most popular of our events because there are less people participating [around 300 as opposed to the 500-600 in the city events] so all the girls meet, they stay longer on each challenge point, they talk to locals and they feel more integrated into local life than when the event is bigger.”

After three successful ‘Pop Ins’ in Risoul, this year, Pop In the City is heading to Les Menuires, within in the huge 3 Vallées ski area. Les Menuires is a very popular resort, great for families and offering some of the best value for money in the 3 Vallées area. The ‘Pop In’ girls chose Les Menuires not only because of its great connections to one of the largest ski areas in the world, but because of its lovely local feel.

Clémentine says: “We had a really good fit with the locals and the tourist office in Les Menuires which is super important for us because they open so many gates for us and put us in touch with the right people”.

Pop In the City is all about connecting with the local experience, so they wanted to choose somewhere where the participants can really engage with the authentic mountain way of life. Indeed, it seems that the girls will have an incredibly action-packed day in store, with challenges and activities ranging from avalanche rescue training and ski-touring introductions, to snail-slime moisturiser making (!) and zip-lining. There’s no predetermined route – you choose your own experience, which means you will meet up with a variety of different teams throughout the day as your paths cross course. Participants will end the day having not only made new friends and learnt useful, practical skills, but also feeling much more engaged with the place and the culture.

“People go skiing but they just keep going down slopes, you go to the restaurant but you always have raclette, so we really wanted to show all the aspects of mountain life and the lives of people who work in a ski resort” says Clémentine.

We can’t wait to see what the full event has in store! Keep an eye on our Instagram page @inthesnow_magazine over the weekend of the 10th March for videos and images from the fun in Les Menuires!
