What’s The Snow Like in France to March 18th, 2017

Conditions in the French Alps are excellent following huge snowfalls over the past week.

Many resorts have had a metre of snow on upper runs.  Some, including the Chamonix Valley and Meribel have had more than 1.5m (five feet) and La Rosiere more than 2m (7 feet)

As a result snow depths are excellent so it looks good for the remaining 6-8 weeks of the season. Most areas now have 1.5-2m of snow on upper slopes, some 3m/10 feet or more.

Here’s how it’s looking in Alpe d’Huez…

Avec plus de 80cm de neige en station, on ne ne sait plus trop où donner de la tête ! ?

There’s also been more fresh snow in the French Pyrenees too where conditions continue to be good.

All the snow has caused some practical issues, especially as there were stormy conditions at times including some very strong winds.  This has led to a high off-piste avalanche danger (4 on the scale of 5) and also to some temporary closures of slopes.

The rate of snowfall is expected to slow now and there have been blue skies reported and superb conditions on the groomed terrain.
