This new column is dedicated to celebrating the best of women in snowsports. For the first one  female athletes from the Team GB tell us how skiing is empowering their lives.

CARA BROWN – Delancey British Alpine Europa Cup Squad

British Ski Champion 2014 and CIT Ski World Champion 2014, Cara is now moving up through European Cup, World cup and events such as World Juniors, pursuing her Olympic dream.

SKIING empowers me because it’s seen as a man’s sport! A lot of characteristics that our associated with men like strength and speed are key to ski racing. I love knowing that every time I go skiing I’m breaking down barriers!  Sports helps me stay really fit and feel good in my body. It also me to travel the world and meet like minded people. It also allows me to push myself, challenge myself and test my limits. I have learnt that when you think you’ve done everything you can and you’ve given everything you’ve got then you can always do a little bit more! I learnt to push through really tough times to come out on the other side.

Skiing has brought to me so many opportunities and given me to visit so many places. Most of all it allows me to be free. I got a plate at home which says “if you’re lucky enough to be in the mountains you’re lucky enough”. Skiing to me is more than just my sport. It’s an opportunity to be in amazing places with amazing people. It also allow us to be on an equal level wit the boys and shred with the best of the guys!

Snowboarding has created a platform for me to be strong, confident and follow my dreams. Finding the love and passion for a sport, has opened up many opportunities which have empowered me not only in my athlete life but day to day. In every day life sport provides me with the inspiration to train to be fit for my sport. This is something I have grown passionate about, when I am not on my snowboard and I am back in the UK I see this as an opportunity to channel my energy positively into my day to day routine improving my energy levels and mood by keeping me moving. Snowboarding is all about experience, every day on the mountain is different and can be challenging, over coming challenges on the mountain is like problem solving in every day life, it’s working out the best way of doing the best possible trick you can do.

KATIE SUMMERHAYES British Park and Pipe Ski Squad

Katie’s goals are to win X Games gold medals and the 2018 Winter Olympics, while pushing the sport as much as possible.

Skiing has made me confident and not afraid to push my limits everyday. It gives me something to get away from real life from. When I’m skiing, nothing else matters and I can focus on that one thing. It also keeps me very fit and gives me so much life experience. I have also learn so much from traveling the world but learn that if you work hard enough, things will start to pay off.
