What do Martin Hewitt (paralysed right arm), Alex Harrison (blind in one eye), Richard Ward (a double amputee) have in common?  All sustained their shattering injuries while fighting with the British Forces in Iraq and Afghanistan and all will be found in Klosters, Switzerland in January 2018 competing in a 100km skiing marathon – the Supporting Wounded Veterans Ski Challenge.

From 18-21st January 2018 Martin, Alex and Richard will be among 25 war veterans pitching their formidable talents against the corporate world as part of the Supporting Wounded Veterans’ Business Challenge.

Coming up to its fourth phenomenally successful year, the Challenge is a major fundraiser for Supporting Wounded Veterans, the charity dedicated to enabling soldiers who have suffered life-changing physical and mental injuries, transition from military discharge to meaningful civilian life.

Founder Gilly Norton said: “Our unique programme offers ski-based rehabilitation to those who are often at rock bottom as a consequence of giving the very best of themselves in the service of their country.Through skiing, we restore their confidence and show them the art of the possible.   We then provide bespoke mentoring, employment advice, family support and, for those who need it, specialist pain management.

“Our success speaks for itself. 87% per cent of our veterans are now retraining or established in new careers. But none of our work would be possible without the invaluable support of the business community.”

The Supporting Wounded Veterans Ski Challenge raises both funds and awareness, creating strong bonds between veterans and potential employers, whilst also providing opportunities for team building and personal development.  It is fun, demanding, adrenaline-fuelled and competitive, where strategy and cunning are just as important as skiing ability with the course itself set up with intimate knowledge of the terrain and resort. The marathon is followed by The Giant Slalom and then a prize-giving dinner.

The Business Challenge invariably raises over £150,000 with the help of up to 25 participating teams.

“Meeting, skiing and socialising with the veterans was, in a word, brilliant,” says one who took part. “Hearing their stories was really inspiring and those of us in the humdrum of City lives probably learnt more about adversity, humanity and humour in those few days than in a year at our desks.”

To enter, teams of four must commit to raising a minimum £7,000 for Supporting Wounded Veterans in addition to paying their costs. Individuals are also welcome after raising a minimum of £1750 and the charity will complete the team. The competitors reside in the Silvretta Parkhotel and the cost of half board accommodation for three nights, airport transfers and ski passes is £3,000 per team of four (or £750 per individual). Flights, equipment hire and lunches are not included.

The 2018 Business Challenge takes place between January 18th and 21st. For more information please contact: [email protected]
