Where to Ski or Snowboard in Austria to January 20, 2018

You could argue that Austria has done better than some of the ski areas in the French, Swiss and Italian Alps that have had so much snow in the fortnight sine Christmas access roads have seen blocked and ski areas closed completely at times due to the avalanche danger.

Most Austrian areas have not seen such huge snowfalls (although the Arlberg has had a lot!) and so most have been open when ski areas further West have been forced to hunker down until storms pass.

We've had over 300cm of total snowfall this season, and more is on the forecast!❄ Snow depth (total): Valluga 305cm, Galzig 240cm, St. Christoph 185cm, Gampen 145cm, Rendl 105cm ❄#stantonamarlberg

There have been occasional problems with gales up high and rain down low and Storm Eleanor caused problems too but mostly it’s been good and the past few days have been especially nice and sunny.

The week ahead in Austria is looking good too.  More mostly moderate snowfalls are expected to begin from about Tuesday – around 15cm a day in most cases.  So the slope cover refresh that some areas are starting to need should be with us soon.

Glacier snow depths are the deepest in the country at 2.7 – 4.4 metres with the Dachstein topping the table with its near 15 foot base.
