The French Alps are in their best shape of the winter so far after the biggest snowfalls of the season for most of the country last weekend.

Since then it has been mostly cold and dry keeping the snow in great shape so some are still managing to find fresh powder off piste.  On the ski runs snowmaking has been able to further build bases.  La Clusaz looks like this:

However bases are looking much better anyway.  Resorts like Morzine (Portes du Soleil above), Samoens and Megeve which had had very little snow cover have seen big snowfalls and are now looking much better and much more like they should for January.  Avoriaz below.

Most resorts have had at least 50m of snow in the last week, some as much as 90cm and almost all at least 30cm.

The snow has been good down in the Pyrenees too where if anything snowfalls have been bigger still and continued all this week.  Cauterets (pictured top) has had nearly 2m of snowfall and now boasts one of the deepest snow depths in France.  Another resort in the region, Ax 3 Domaines is pictured below when the snow was falling.
