Baqueira Beret is one of Spain’s largest ski resorts, set at the head of the beautiful Val d’Aran near Viella on the northern side of the Pyrenees. The village is tastefully purpose-built in wood and stone rather than concrete, sitting on the main road leading up to the high Bonaigua Pass.
Developed by Luis Arias, a Spanish National Ski Champion, Baqueira first opened in 1964 and remains a favourite of the Spanish Royal Family, who regularly holiday here. Advanced skiers should head for the high Argulls basin and the terrain around Cap de Baqueira, where altitude and exposure combine to give some of the most challenging and consistently snow-sure skiing in the Pyrenees.
Baqueira Beret’s Atlantic-influenced climate gives it a reputation for consistently high-quality snow, backed by around 41% snowmaking coverage across the ski area. The high Argulls basin in particular tends to hold good snow from before Christmas through to after Easter.
