An incredible new lift system which dramatically improves travel around the Jungfrau ski area in Switzerland is now fully open.

The second part of the V-cableway project from Grindelwald, the Eiger Express, opened at the weekend, the first section opened last year.  Altogether construction too took 908 days and the project cost is £396 million (CHF 470,000,000).

A small opening ceremony saw a film in which Victor the eagle provided a bird’s-eye view of the V-Cableway route, before Sherkan the eagle flew through the terminal with scissors for cutting the ribbon.

Billed, perhaps rather uninspiringly, as “the world’s heaviest 3S-cableway” the Eiger Express  transports guests from Grindelwald Grund to the Eigergletscher station in only 15 minutes.

This new gondola means visitors can enjoy a quicker and more comfortable journey to the winter sports area around Eigergletscher and Kleine Scheidegg, shared with neighbouring Wengen, as well as to the famous Jungfraujoch – Top of Europe.

”The coronavirus crisis will be followed by an era of new growth in international tourism”.  And the V-Cableway will ensure the success of tourism in the Jungfrau region as a whole in the medium and long-term, making it a year-round destination for Swiss tourism,” said Thomas Bieger, Chairman of the Board at Jungfraubahn Holding AG.
