Big, Bigger, 4 Vallées

The skiing region of Quatre Vallées surrounding Nendaz and Veysonnaz is unique in Switzerland – and unique in its dimensions. A VIP ski trip is the perfect way to sample all of its winter pleasures. Enjoy a day from a VIP guest’s view:

Skiing instructor Genika Hulliger greets us in the lobby of our hotel. Genika is just as excited. “We are heading out to an incredibly large skiing region with spectacular slopes“.  Our trip high up to the Mont Fort peak doesn’t leave us time for boredom. As VIP guests, we are given priority on many of the lifts. Standing in line is yesterday’s story. After arriving at the top at an elevation of 3,330 m a.s.l., Genika presents the fantastic panorama. The majestic peaks right in front of us are the first you see mentioned in any Swiss travel guide: Matterhorn, Mont Blanc, and many more of their famous companions.

Our skills are being put to the test right there and then! The slope leading to the Col des Gentianes is too steep to be groomed by a snowcat, and peppered with enormous bumps. We have to admit: without Genika we would have hesitated. Let’s do it again! But, on the other hand… we have only just covered a few of the 400 km of slopes in the 4 Vallées. So we opt for some new excitement: the Piste de l’Ours near Veysonnaz for instance, famous for its beauty and numerous world cup races. Naturally, there’s off-piste at infinitum – the same is true here, the sky’s the limit. To cool off after all this adrenalin, we try out some of the gentler slopes and then relax in one of the very good restaurants. At the end of the day, we go for a drink together with Genika in his favourite bar and think about what he promised us. It was just like he said: we never repeated one single slope, improved our skiing technique, and enjoyed the spectacular mountain sceneries. We’ll be back – no question about that.
