It’s the first day of the 2016/-17 season in the French Alps as Tignes glacier slopes re-open – they’ll stay open to May 2017. Let’s hope it’s a powder day.
1 – Norwegian Area Opening With Last Season’s Snow, Geilo, Norway
After trying it successfully a year ago, Norway’s Geilo plans to jump- start the 2016/-17 ski season by covering a slope with snow stockpiled from last winter.
2 – 2016 Season Winding Down in Southern Hemisphere, Coronet Peak, New Zealand
Whilst things are starting to happen in the Nnorthern Hhemisphere, ski areas in the Southern Hemisphere are winding down their winter 2016. It’s closing day at Coronet Peak in New Zealand today.
10 – Season Opening in Lapland, Maybe, Ruka, Finland

16 – Swiss Glacier Areas Open, Switzerland
More Swiss ski areas start to open, joining Saas- Fee and Zermatt. It’s opening weekend at Crans- Montana, Engelberg and the Diavolezza glacier near St Moritz.
16 – Cervinia Opening Weekend, Italy
Cervinia aims to open its glacier ski slopes this weekend and next before opening daily to the end of April. It joins Val Senales and Passo Stelvio as a third Italian option for autumn skiing.
22 – Ski iInstructor Training Course Begins, Tignes, France
Snoworks GAP’s 2016 BASI Level 1 and 2 Ski or Snowboard Instructor GAP Course kicks off. The course runs to 17 December, so successful candidates can start working with a ski school before the main season.
27 – 30 – London Ski & Snowboard Show, Battersea Park, London
And then there was one. The UK’s only remaining ski show returns to its new home at the Battersea Evolution centre and is back to its late October time slot.
29 – Diablerets Glacier Opens, Switzerland
A sixth Swiss glacier ski area is scheduled to open today after a fortnight’s closure for maintenance. The Glacier 3000 area Les Diablerets and Gstaad will be open for skiers again.
