The leading ski areas in France open a week or two later than the main ski areas in Italy, Austria and Switzerland but after there being only a handful of French area open a week ago, more than a dozen are opening this weekend.

The good news is there’s been more fresh snow over the past few days with the Pyrenees actually posting the biggest snowfalls with St Lary, Ax 3 Domaines, Les Angles Cauterets and Ax les Thermes all being dumped on.

Cauterets is now 70% open and reported 50m of fresh snow in 24 hours yesterday.  However it is closed today due to avalanche danger after all the snow.

In the Alps the Portes du Soleil and several Chamonix Valley ski areas including Les Houches have opened this week. Flaine, La Clusaz, La Rosiere and Valloire in the Maurienne Valley are also open and all reporting good conditions.

Here’s Val Thorens getting snowed on on Wednesday.  It and Tines have issued powder alarms for 20cm or more of snow in 24 hour in the past week.  Les Gets is pictured top.
