At more than 3,840m (12,000ft), amidst Europe’s highest Alpine peaks, the Aiguille du Midi far surpasses the definition of a ski lift ! The cable cars lift you from central Chamonix up more than 2,800 vertical metres – the biggest vertical lift on earth in fact. Some take it to access the world’s longest lift-served ski run, the 22km-long Vallée Blanche, but some don’t ski at all and instead bravely Step into the Void – an amazing clear glass box sticking out more than 1,000m (3,000ft) above the nearest ground below.

But from 19 December 2015 to 17 April 2016, an outstanding exhibition of British heritage in Chamonix will be on display to visitors who want to learn more about the Valley’s history. Here you can discover talented amateur and professional 19th-century mountaineering artists’ works, on loan from the prestigious Alpine Club collection.

But there’s plenty for all abilities, and Balme and Les Houches offer wonderful family skiing and fun terrain parks, while Brévent-Flégère has a variety of south-facing intermediate slopes with breathtaking panoramas. Around 90% of the Chamonix Valley’s skiing is located above 2000m, making it the perfect choice for early and late skiing.
