This summer, a local organisation called EdelAlp, is offering the chance for UK based ‘godparents’ to choose their ‘Summer Queen’, a traditional Heren Cow, when they arrive in Verbier for their summer holiday.

The Swiss-based project has been designed to promote and support mountain agriculture. Sponsorship costs CHF275 (around £240) and ‘godparents’ can choose cows from pastures across the Alpine Valais canton in Switzerland, including Verbier.

All sponsors receive unlimited visiting rights to their cow and its farmers throughout summer, creating a unique trip. Sponsors visiting their ‘Summer Queens’ will also receive an exclusive five kilogram AOP Alpine cheese from their Queen’s pasture, worth CHF 100 (around £90).

As well as providing the Heren cow breeders with invaluable direct financial support, all ‘godparents’ will receive invitations to three exclusive events based in the area, including the chance to enjoy the Desalpe festival – celebrating the cows’ return from the mountains to their stables.

“Here is a great project to support a unique breed and a symbol of the Valais. How can you resist discovering this Valaisan heritage, with passionate breeders, and discovering a region while tasting local cheese?” said Michaela, a Queen Cow supporter.

EdelAlp , meaning ‘precious Alps’ and referring to the vital help sponsors provide, was set up in 2020 by Camille Besse (24) and Samuel Balet (24) within the Business Team Academy at HES-SO Valais/Wallis. They developed the My Summer Queen sponsorship programme to provide a local and sustainable impact on the region by offering support to farmers and enabling the public to share the unique experiences of Alpine life.

Cows are available to choose from the Mille pasture, in Val de Bagnes and the Grand-Plans pasture near Verbier.
