Powderhorn Mountain Resort

Back to Skiing in Colorado

Powderhorn Mountain Resort sits on the edge of the Grand Mesa, often described as the largest flat-topped mountain in the world, looking out over the Western Slope near Grand Junction. It is a friendly, uncrowded ski area with a strong local following, great glade skiing and prices that make a pleasant change from the big-name resorts. This winter it turns 60, and it is celebrating with a new lift.

What’s New for 2026/27: Wild West Express

The old West End double chair, part of Powderhorn life for more than 50 years, has been replaced by the Wild West Express, a high-speed quad. The detachable lift previously ran as the Elk Camp chair at Snowmass, where it was replaced by a six-pack last winter, and has been completely rebuilt by Leitner-Poma, with new drive systems and grips, so that it should run like new. It cuts the ride to the top of the west side from around 13 minutes to about six.

With the Flat Top Flyer, the high-speed quad added in 2016, it means almost every skiable acre at Powderhorn is now served by a fast lift. The resort has also hinted at something special for chair number 60.

Skiing for Less

Powderhorn has built its reputation on keeping skiing affordable, and its Mission Affordable programme continues this winter. That includes free beginner ski and snowboard lessons, the Mission Affordable 4-Pack, four lift tickets that can be shared and used on any day of the season, and good-value meal deals. For the anniversary, the resort has also launched a limited three-year season pass for regular visitors.

The Skiing

Powderhorn has around 1,600 acres, with a good mix of groomed runs, open glades and steeper tree skiing. Queues are short, even at weekends, and the views across the valleys of western Colorado are hard to beat. It is an easy place to ski with a family, and a good one for improving intermediates.

Getting There

Grand Junction Regional Airport is around 45 minutes’ drive away and has connecting flights from Denver and other US hubs. By road from Denver, Powderhorn is about four hours via I-70. It pairs nicely with a trip that includes Aspen Snowmass or Sunlight.
