The Swedish ski region that’s home to Scandinavia’s largest ski resort also has Sweden’s worst record for cases of the sexually transmitted disease chlamydia, according to official statistics.
The stats for 2015, released on Monday and reported by the country’s The Local newspaper, revealed figures across Sweden hit a seven-year high of 37,808 cases.
The region of Jämtland, home to Scandinavia’s most popular ski resort, Åre, among others, had the most cases per head of population, with 488 cases per 100,000 people, ahead of capital, Stockholm.
Regional health officials interviewed by The Local said they did not know if the high figures were because the region really did have the worst numbers in the country or if they were just more rigorous in testing than other regions.
They said numbers do tend to spike during the ski season but believed cases were more common in season workers in the ski industry than with visiting tourists.
Sweden has a reputation for high levels of STDs and legally requires anyone infected to inform all previous sexual partners about it.
