On-mountain dining is a big part of the joy of a ski holiday in the Ski Juwel and with more than two-dozen different huts to visit on the slopes, the tricky part is deciding which ones to visit first.
Among the must tries is the rustic Gipfö Hit located at 1,898m altitude on the top of the Schatzberg mountain, directly connected to Alpbach by lift. Popular year-round, it is located just beneath the impressive Schatzberg cross and right next to the connection lift to Inner Alpbach, but it’s also popular with ski mountaineers. Here you can enjoy Tirolean specialties such as Brezen Soup, salads and schnitzels.
The Berggasthof Hornboden is another fabulous mountain restaurant on the slopes, this time with a more modern design, located high up at 1,800 m altitude below the Wiedersbergerhornbahn gondola top station in Alpbach. It has a modern self service area, snow bar and large sun terrace. Facilities include a designated area on the lower ground level is provided for all those who bring their lunch with them. On a sunny winter’s or spring day there’s a spacious terrace for taking in the stunning views.
Set lower in the mountains, the Böglalm is located in Inneralpbach at 1.220m and there’s a spacious terrace here as well as the indoor dining for those warm spring days. Located next to the Galtenberg lift, this is the place to enjoy a mug of mulled wine or Jagatee and to savour some of the traditional dishes before speeding back out down the hill. The hut is famous for being home to the Alpbacher Kasspatzln, or “the biggest frying pan on the mountain” which serves up fabulous fried dishes and it is also renowned for its delicious spit roast chicken.
If you want to relax in a cosy hut at 1364 metres then head to Norderbergalm in the ski area Markbachjoch in Niederau. This hut is located directly on run no. 15 and near the fantastic toboggan run. Winter hikers need just 30 minutes from the Markbachjoch cable car mountain station. Speciality: Kaiserschmarren with red berries.
