As torrential rain again causes problems in some parts of the Alps, ski resorts have noted that the rain has turned to snow at high elevations, turning mountain tops white for the first time since last spring.
Italy’s Bardonecchia posted the image above on Thursday afternoon, 5 September, with Val d’Isere posting the image below, noting the snow is falling above 3,000m altitudes.
There are currently four glacier ski areas aiming to be open for glacier skiing in the Alps, but recent weeks and months have seen high temperatures to high altitudes, melting the snowpack and causing some to close temporarily whilst they await cooler, snowier conditions.
But Switzerland’s Saas Fee and Zermatt, Italy’s Passo Stelvio and Austria’s Hintertux aim to be open whenever they can.
Two more Austrian Tirol glaciers, Pitztal and Solden, are hoping to open on the final weekend of this month for their 24-25 seasons.
