Sweden’s top resort and the largest north of the Alps, Åre is one ski area you do not want to miss! Åre is a traditional mountain village where the wide range of skiing, shopping, restaurants and bars on offer create a real metropolitan vibe. The ski slopes and vistas are familiar from the many World Cup events that have been hosted here and international travel magazines have repeatedly named Åre one of the world’s best ski resorts.
A skiing holiday in Åre is perfect for both advanced skiers and families with children. The cable car or gondola lift easily takes you up onto the Åreskutan Mountain where you can enjoy some great skiing.
Are is snow-sure from November to May, with nearly 50 lifts and more than a 1000m of vertical 100km of downhill slopes. Mount Åreskutan has seen many new pistes and lifts added over the past few years and the treeless area below the mountain’s peak, a rarity in Scandinavia, equates to riding freedom. Nowhere else in the mountains of Scandinavia can you find such a wide variety, scope and quality of activities like cross-country skiing, ski touring, paragliding, zipline, snowmobiling, dog sledding, swimming pools and spas. So if you’re looking for diversity, Åre should be your obvious choice.
For those after nightlife, the area here does not disappoint, while world-class shopping encapsulates quality brands as well as locally produced luxury articles. Åre also boasts some incredible hotels; choose between ultramodern, conceptual spots, complete self-contained resorts, romantic 19th century hotels, hostels or cosy chalets complete with fireplaces and perhaps bearskins on the walls.
It’s not as far as you think either, although it may feel you’re within touching distance of the Artic circle. There are two international airports (Åre/Östersund Airport and Trondheim/Vaernes Airport in Norway) within around one hour transfer, and two hour direct flight from both Heathrow and Stansted – it’s as easy as flying to the Alps.
