Built for the 1992 Albertville Winter Olympics, La Plagne’s bobsleigh track is the only one in France you can actually ride. The 1.5 km course drops 124.5m through 19 bends, just below Plagne 1800 in the hamlet of La Roche (there’s a free shuttle from Plagne Centre). Four options are available:
It runs from mid-December to the end of March, ice conditions permitting.
For something truly unusual, book a night in Over the Moon, a converted snow groomer parked up at 2,000m. A snowcat carries you up to the summit of Arpette, at around 2,400m, for a night ascent under the stars and sunrise views over Mont Blanc the next morning. The suite comes with a proper bed, a private whirlpool, home cinema, champagne and breakfast, and you can ski down at first lifts or ride the chairlift back. Prices start from €459, rising to €559 over Christmas, New Year and Valentine’s Day.
Slow things down with a guided snowshoe walk through the forests and villages, or get pulled across the snow on a dog-sledding excursion. More adventurous types can try ice climbing on frozen waterfalls, ski joering (skiing towed by a horse), or a taster biathlon session combining cross-country skiing with target shooting.
Belle Plagne’s Family SPA is the perfect antidote to a big ski day, with a 35 degree outdoor pool, an aqua trail and a range of wellness treatments. It’s a good option for a half-day off the slopes, especially with younger children in tow.
There are outdoor ice rinks and dedicated toboggan runs across the resort’s villages, alongside zip lines (tyroliennes) for those chasing an adrenaline hit above the treeline.
Tandem paragliding flights launch from several points around La Plagne, giving a genuinely spectacular view over the Paradiski area and the peaks beyond. No experience is necessary, just a head for heights.
La Plagne is well set up for adapted skiing, with handiski equipment and qualified instructors available for skiers with disabilities.
