Altenmarkt‑Zauchensee is one of Austria’s most reliable early‑season ski destinations, offering a blend of relaxed village charm and high‑altitude terrain that consistently delivers strong snow conditions from 27 November onwards. Zauchensee’s elevated, north‑facing slopes hold their snow impressively well at the start of winter, creating crisp early‑morning corduroy and dependable coverage that sets the tone for the season.
The terrain suits all levels, from first‑timers enjoying gentle beginner runs to confident intermediates and adventurous skiers seeking varied pistes, wide bowls and a dramatic mountain backdrop. As part of the vast Ski Amadé network, once the main season gets underway, a single pass unlocks 760 kilometres of slopes, 270 lifts and 25 resorts across five regions.
Off the mountain, Altenmarkt and Zauchensee offer a warm, easy‑going atmosphere perfect for unwinding after early‑winter laps. It’s the combination of Alpine authenticity and reliable start‑of‑season conditions that keeps skiers returning year after year.

Early-season skiing here coincides with Advent, so a trip in late November or December comes with plenty of festive atmosphere.
In Altenmarkt, the Advent Market fills the market square at weekends from 21 November to 20 December, plus 7 and 8 December. Wooden stalls built by local carpenters showcase regional handicrafts and culinary delights, all beneath a large Advent wreath and a glittering sky of lights.
Up in Zauchensee, at 1,350m, the Bergsee.Advent transforms the lakeshore with a sound cloud and light installations. Walk through the illuminated entrance gate to find regional delicacies and hot drinks, horse-drawn carriage rides and the sounds of alpine horn players and singers. It takes place on 7, 11, 18 and 23 December, from 6pm.
On Wednesday evenings from 2 December, an astronomy expert leads a telescopic stargazing tour at the Zauchensee observatory, searching for the Pleiades and the Orion Nebula. The tour only runs when the sky is mostly cloudless.
Another major attraction, the Erlebnis‑Therme Amadé swimming pools and spa complex blends relaxation and family fun with saltwater pools, a wave pool, a sports pool and Austria’s only one‑man looping slide. The spacious sauna world offers themed saunas and aromatic infusions for deep unwinding.
