Springtime skiing in Colorado is something else. The sun’s high, the snow’s still holding, and there’s this electric energy in the air - like the mountains themselves know winter’s almost over. Sunshine, slush, birdsong and the sound of snow melting - it's magic. After 13 years of travelling professionally as an athlete, I’ve done the dark -27°C days in various resorts around the world, and I can tell you - this is what riding is all about. I spent six days, after touching down in Denver - otherwise known as the Mile High City - exploring new territory. A direct BA flight from London opens up three epic locations, each leaving its own mark and memories. From the infamous Breckenridge peaks to the raw playground of Winter Park and the creative pulse of Denver, this trip hit every note. Here’s how it went down: Breckenridge: A hive of activity and endless terrain We kicked things off in Breckenridge and I couldn’t have asked for a better start. Breck’s famous for its Five Peaks, each with its own character. From the smooth, groomed cruisers on Peak 7 to the steep and deep terrain of Peak 10, there’s something here for every level. On day one, we hit the Imperial Express, the highest elevated chairlift in North America. Standing above 12,800 feet, the air is thin and the views are expansive. It's a true big-mountain experience that still feels totally accessible. You can even take off your board and hike the final stretch to the summit - over 13,000 feet! It’s an exhilarating lung pump, but the reward is unbeatable: full 360-degree views of the terrain and surrounding mountain resorts, including Copper and Keystone. After full days on the slopes, Breck's town scene delivered in style. Once a 19th-century mining town, it's a place that wears its history well and is now a buzzing après hub. We stayed at Gravity Haus, a boutique-hotel with a modern, funky vibe, complete with an indoor Japanese onsen-style soaking tub - ideal for post-ride recovery. YES the sauna was HOT (I can confirm), and I hit it daily for post mountain recovery to stretch out tight glutes and hips in the heat. The food scene here is equally impressive, even at the hotel. On the first evening, we dined at Cabin Juice - Brussels sprouts to die for, sweet potato fries, and a legendary Salmon and saffron coconut rice dish (delicious). On night two, we explored the fine dining scene at Rootstalk, which serves up top draw seasonal food, fresh local ingredients and an ever changing menu. Breckenridge is part of the Epic Pass, which gives you access to top resorts across North America and beyond—making it a smart choice for riders looking to pack in multiple mountains on one trip. Winter Park: Colorado's Best-Kept Secret Two days later, we hit the road with a drive over Berthoud Pass (hello, breathtaking views) to reach Winter Park - a resort that flies under the radar compared to its high-profile neighbours. But what it lacks in international fame, it more than makes up for in terrain and atmosphere. Winter Park really took me by surprise—in the best way. It’s one of those proper local gems that the Coloradans love, but most Europeans haven't discovered yet. The vibe? Super chill. No queues, no chaos, just endless runs and proper mountain magic. The terrain really is impressive and grand in its scale. The legendary Mary Jane zone stands out with its natural steeps and dreamy tree runs that feel like your own private playground. It also boasts one of the best terrain parks I’ve ever ridden. Massive pro lines (not for me anymore!), but with features for all levels, whether you’re just starting to enjoy freestyle or a seasoned pro. The resort itself is compact and easy to navigate, so a cheeky lie in, and the ride up to the après is never far! There’s a gondola that’ll whisk you straight to après from 5pm. Grab a drink, soak up the last of the sun at Sun Spot, and take in the views from the perfect little sun trap. It’s got everything, and somehow still feels like a secret. The pass for the upcoming season goes on each spring. www.ikonpass.com Denver: Urban Energy After two days in Winter Park, we hopped on the Winter Park Express - a historic ski train that runs directly from the resort to Denver's Union Station. No traffic, no stress—just a scenic ride through Rocky Mountain tunnels and rolling foothills before arriving in the Mile High City. The snow train really was quite the experience and an exceptional concept for those living in downtown Denver. Hop onboard at Union station to arrive at the start of the day, and the departure is at 4.35pm, so after a full day on the mountain, you can kick back, and relax onboard with a drink, hit the après and celebrate a fab day on the mountain with friends, and no one at the wheel. Theres an option to sit in the quiet carriages, which have big comfy seats, or head down to the open table car, which offers 360° panoramic views. Pulling into Denver's Union Station felt like the perfect way to round off the trip. Denver blends urban energy with laid-back mountain culture. We spent our time exploring the RiNo (River North) Art District, home to some of the best street art in the country. A guided graffiti tour took us through colourful backstreets, followed by a caffeine fix at Novo Coffee. Denver's craft coffee game is on point. From there, it was all about soaking up the city's vibrant scene - craft breweries, rooftop bars, and a final feast at Mercantile Dining & Provision, a spot that blends fine dining with casual comfort. As the sun set over the skyline, we toasted to an epic six-day ride through Colorado's best. Spring shredding in the Rockies? Highly recommended... I'll be going back!
