There have been huge snowfalls in Western Canada over the past 48 hours and one of Banff’s ski areas has announced it will open tomorrow, Friday 3rd of November, for the 2017-18 ski season.

Mt Norquay will open on Friday, with the two other Banff ski areas: Sunshine (pictured below) and Lake Louise (pictured above), confirming they’ll be opening a week later, as will Marmot Basin.

Nakiska will also open this weekend on Saturday for what they’re describing as a season ‘preview weekend.’

Kicking Horse ski area in BC say they received 34cm (14 inches) of fresh snow overnight in the Alpine, bringing their 48 hour total to 50cm (20 inches).

“Our new snow stake is buried!” said a resort spokesperson.  Sunshine had the same problem.

The snow has also been dumping on some ski areas, notably Jackson Hole, south of the border, and further west in BC and California.  Boreal says it will open next Wednesday, the second ski area to do so in California after Mt Rose at the end of October.

Jackson Hole (below) say they’ve had 35cm (14 inches) overnight and expect another 75cm (30 inches) by Monday – potentially more than a metre of snow.
