Sunshine ski area near Banff in Alberta, Canada, is set to reopen for 16 days of summer skiing and riding from this weekend. The decision follows an extraordinary winter in which Sunshine accumulated more than 1,025 centimetres of snowfall with more than 50cm more falling in the month since their 25-26 season ended.
That’s over 33 feet of all‑natural snow, enough to bury a three‑storey building and the second most the resort had received in its long history. With a healthy snow depth still holding at high elevation, the resort will offer 16 days of summer skiing from June 20 through July 5, including a uniquely Canadian way to celebrate the country’s national day on July 1st.
“Back in June of 2022 when we opened for summer skiing, we saw such a positive response from our community. It was then that we decided, if we’re ever presented with the opportunity to open for summer skiing in the future – we need to do what we can to make it happen,” said Kendra Scurfield, VP Communications at Banff Sunshine Village. “As a team, we’re ecstatic about our upcoming summer ski season. Honestly, what’s more Canadian than skiing in your cut off jean shorts on Canada Day?”
The Strawberry Express chairlift will operate daily, and crews are preparing a Summer Strawberry Terrain Park. The standish chairlift will also operate for as long as the snow there remains good. Sunshine Mountain Lodge will reopen on June 19, offering the rare novelty of ski‑in, ski‑out lodging in midsummer.
This summer extension caps a standout year for Sunshine, which opened on November 2, its earliest start in 40 years, and delivered record snowfall, new après experiences at The Goat Club, and major events including the North American debut of Red Bull Jump & Freeze.
