As more glacier resorts open in the alps along with the first high altitude non-glacier ski areas (in Colorado) and high latitude (in Lapland), Europe’s highest ski area at Zermatt is pointing out it’s open 365 days a year for snow sports – one of only two resorts in the world that is – and that it already has 25km of piste open to ski on.
“Thanks to abundant snowfall in the last few days, Zermatt already offers 25 kilometres of excellently prepared pistes in outstanding condition,” said a resort statement, adding, “The fluffy powder snow that fell in last few days has put a wintery spell on the beautiful landscape around Zermatt and makes for ideal skiing conditions.”
There are mixed reports on the status of the cross-Italian border connection to neighbouring Cervinia. Cervinia says it is now open at weekends although closed in the week; Zermatt says the link won’t open until Friday, 1st November 2013.
Zermatt is currently offering a range of packages including accommodation in a variety of categories, lift pass and inclusive testing of new 2014 ski season equipment.
Brands to be tested include Atomic, Blizzard, Dynastar, Elan, Fischer, Head, K2, Movement, Nordica, Rossignol, Salomon, Scott and Völkl but are sdkis only and guests must bring along, or rent separately, their ski boots, poles and all other gear except the skis.
