Skier Jay DeBaggis has set a new world speed record in the little known discipline of skiing in a straightjacket – hitting 64mph.
DeBaggis undertook his challenge at Arapahoe Basin ski area in Colorado where resort grooming staff created a smooth surface for his attempt.
“Looks like they put a groom run as smooth as a baby’s behind on that hill,” DeBaggis, who was wearing a custom made pink straightjacket told local media.
DeBaggis said he had been skiing without poles for more than a decade and spent all season practicing skiing with his arms around his body aiming to hit his target speed of 60mph.
His aim was not just to set a first world record in straightjacket speed skiing but also to raise funds for the local Summit County Mountain Mentors Program, which currently has a long waiting list of children wanting to join the programme.
It’s unclear whether the record has ever been set before or whether the 64mph achievement of Jay DeBaggis has any ‘official recognition’ but those involved in the attempt told local media,
”We’re calling it a world record.”
