Top Spanish ski area Baqueira Beret has successfully completed a test run of its snowmaking systems for 2013-14 as temperatures in the Pyrenees dropped.
The automated system starts making snow automatically when probes detect temperatures down to -6 to -10 º C A snowmaking team of 12 people are also in place, managing the system 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
In full season snowmaking system of Baqueira Beret can produce up to 4,500 cubic metres of snow per hour and a total of 611 snow cannons area installed along 40.4 km of the resort’s pistes – about a third of the total.
“Baqueira uses all the technological advances that improve each passing year to make snowmaking more efficient with maximum savings of energy and water resources,” said a resort statement.
