Park City and Vail Must Talk to Each Other

A judge has ruled that Park City Mountain Resort and Talisker Land Holdings must talk to each other to resolve the future of Park City Mountain Resort.
Although the base of the ski area and most of the buildings and lifts at Park City Mountain Resort are located on lands owned by the resort, much of the mountain where the slopes are located are owned by a company called Talisker, which has passed on control of its land to Vail Resorts in a 50 year lease.
Taslisker and Park City Mountain Resort had been in dispute over rent payments on the land and renewal of the lease, with Vail Resorts enforcing an eviction notice on Park City Mountain resort which earlier court cases had upheld. Vail Resorts are reported to have wanted Park City Mountain Resort to vacate the land within 60 days, giving it space, if it wished, to expand its adjacent ski area of Canyons on to what would then be the former Park City Mountain Resort’s land as early as next season.
Park City Mountain Resort said they had no plans to sell their base facilities, which are the only ones of three Park City ski areas actually based in Park City itself, leaving the potential of a ski area that could no longer be accessed directly from downtown Park City.
Park City Mountain Resort , which has run the ski area for more than 50 years had said Talisker and Vail Resorts had refused to negotiate. The new ruling upholds Vail’s 60 day eviction period on Park City Mountain resort but adds the caveat that both sides must negotiate the issues, with an independent arbiter, with a meeting set for August 15th, 2014.
