It was on 18 November 1961 when the Burfield chairlift first began turning at the Tod Mountain Ski Area in British Columbia, Canada.
At the time the longest chairlift in North America, 50 years later, the original ski area is now known as Sun Peaks Resort, but many of the locals still hold on to memories of the resort’s origins, and so winter 2011–12 will be all about celebrating the golden anniversary of Tod Mountain at Sun Peaks Resort.
Since its transition to a destination resort in the mid‐90s, Sun Peaks continues to stand up with the top resorts in North America, being ranked as the second best resort in Canada, and 13th best in North America by Condé Nast Traveller.
The second largest ski area in the province, and third largest in Canada, Sun Peaks boasts close to 15km2 of varied terrain normally blanketed by light, dry powder, across three unique mountain faces. Nordic skiers will find over 50km of groomed/track set, and backcountry trails. All this is set above and around the pedestrianised village.
