The Alpine Summer has a long history that dates back to the early days of farming. The farmers would take their cattle to the higher altitudes in June and stay there until September, while their wives and children would take care of the crops and hay in the valley. The dairy farmers and shepherds would work hard to milk the cows, make butter and cheese, cut grass and store hay for the winter. The cheese would be aged in an earth cellar and brought down to the valley during the cattle drive. The cattle drive is a festive occasion that marks the end of the Alpine Summer and celebrates the return of the animals and their owners.
