Breast cancer charity, Walk the Walk, probably best known for their iconic MoonWalks, where women and men Power Walk through the streets at midnight in brightly decorated bras, are seeking participants in this winter’s Arctic Marathon a 42k back country ski course which takes place within the Arctic Circle in Northern Sweden, close to the iconic Ice hotel.
Taking place in the Abisko National Park in Sweden, the event includes two days of ski trekking – although Walk the Walk say you do not have to be an experienced skier to complete the challenge.- and three nights in snug mountain lodges looking out for the Northern Lights.
After the trek, participants enjoy two nights in the stunning Ice Hotel, which is newly carved from scratch every year and return to the airport for the flight back by husky sled, rather than taxi.
Trekking takes place in small groups of eight or fewer, accompanied by knowledgeable park rangers so that everyone feels supported, whatever their skiing skill level. And best of all, the money raised from completing the challenge goes towards breast cancer causes.
“No mobile phone reception, no social media – just you, your skis and a small group of fellow travellers… The Arctic Marathon offers the chance to explore a true wilderness, see the Northern Lights and spend some time away from civilisation,” said a spokesperson on behalf of Walk The Walk.
The Arctic Marathon takes place annually – in 2016 the dates are 26th February – 3rd March. 2017 dates will be available shortly.
Participation costs £3,400, which includes pretty well all trip costs including flights to/from London. Scaled discounts available if participants choose to fundraise which range up to a £3150 refund if £7,000 is raised.
