More ski resorts open in Canada and US and Switzerland today as heavy snow falls in Western North America and is forecast to fall in the Alps over the next 48 hours.

Mt Norquay at Banff opened yesterday (pictured top), the first in Canada, and it is due to be joined by a second Albertan ski area, Nakiska, later today.

However two Swiss ski areas – Davos and Laax – along with Levi in Lapland, have open earlier, thanks to being in earlier time zones.

Davos and Laax will open high altitude terrain, with Davos opening runs in its Parsenn sector.  Levi has opened one run a week ahead of hosting world cup races next weekend.

In the USA a fifth ski area will open joining already open Arapahoe Basin and Loveland in Colorado;  Mt Rose in California and Timberline in Oregon – the unlikely-seeming Trollhaugen in Wisconsin.  It will open using machine made snow.

Heavy Snow Forecast in the Alps

Heavy snow is expected in the Alps, particularly on Sunday, accompanied by strong winds, so Laax has already announced before it opens that it won’t be open on Sunday.
