Spring Skiing is Special in Saalbach
Spring skiing is all about great skiing in the morning, and then soaking up the rays in the afternoon.
In Austria’s huge Skicircus region, they’ve got that down to a fine art, with hundreds of kilometres of slopes, all interlinked above the villages of Saalbach, Hinterglemm, Leogang and Fieberbrunn, all beautifully groomed each morning to provide a superb ski surface. You can ski or board lap after lap, whizzing back up the slopes almost as fast as you ski down them, thanks to a network of 70 fast, comfortable, state-of-the-art high-speed lifts, most of them chairs and gondolas.
Then, as things warm up, skiers can enjoy some drinks, a snack or a meal in one of the 60 ski huts located right across this big area of 270km of slopes, while enjoying the sunshine.
Another highlight of the Skicircus is the number of mountain huts scattered across the ski area. More than 60 traditional alpine huts offer places to stop for lunch or simply pause on a sunny terrace and enjoy the views. In spring these terraces become one of the great pleasures of a ski day.
Events also bring a lively atmosphere to the mountains during the final weeks of the season. Each spring the White Pearl Mountain Days festival combines skiing with live music, culinary experiences and outdoor events across the Skicircus, creating a relaxed celebration of the season’s final weeks.
Thanks to its large ski area, modern lift system and lively alpine villages, Saalbach regularly features among destinations worth considering for spring skiing in the Alps. It can also be a good option for travellers planning skiing in April when many resorts begin to wind down their operations.
