Switzerland is currently second only to Austria in terms of the number of ski areas it has open.

The Glacier 3000 ski area between Les Diablerets and Gstaad was the latest area to open, on the last weekend of October, taking the choice of Swiss glaciers already open to ski up to five – with that number due to reach seven by the first Ssaturday of the month.

It’s pictured above and here it is on opening day, Saturday 28th October:

The higher slopes at Laax and Davos will be the sixth and seventh to open this Saturday, 4th November with other high Swiss centres like Arosa, Crans Montana and Samnaun set to open later in November.

Currently the other Swiss options are the Diavolezza Glacier run near St Moritz and Engelberg (below), which opened last month, and Saas Fee, open since the summer and always-open Zermatt.

Glacier 3000, which got 5cm of fresh snow at the end of October has the deepest base at 1m, Engelberg has had the most fresh snow with 10cm of new cover as we enter November.   Zermatt and Saas Fee (below) both have the biggest ski areas open in the country with 18km of runs a piece open so far.
